At a glance

Trapezoidal steel sheets are profiled metal sheets used for roofs, walls and other building cladding. When choosing sheets, distinguish between structural roof decking and sheets intended for cladding. They serve different purposes and have different technical requirements, despite their similar profiled appearance. This guide explains common applications, protective coatings and the factors affecting selection and total cost. Colour and sheet price alone are not enough: the supporting structure, loads and installation must also be considered. Check the documentation for the chosen product for its exact properties. ASPanel can provide information about roof and wall profiles and current availability. This overview does not replace structural design or product installation instructions.

Structural roof decking

Structural profiled sheets can form the load-bearing deck of a roof. They are used, for example, in industrial, commercial and agricultural buildings. The profile, sheet thickness, support spacing and loads must be assessed together.

Structural sheets cannot be selected by appearance alone. Their use requires load data for the specific product and structural design.

Common applications

  • Roofs on homes and smaller buildings, where the product is suitable for the structure.

  • Wall cladding and roofing systems for warehouses and production halls.

  • Carports, garages and small canopies.

  • Cladding for fences and gates, with wind loads also taken into account.

Roof and wall cladding

Cladding sheets can form the outer layer of a roof or wall. Typical applications include canopies, garages, fences and storage buildings.

A single steel sheet is not, by itself, an insulated sandwich panel. The other layers of a heated building’s envelope and the management of moisture in the structure must be addressed separately.

Protective coatings and appearance

Trapezoidal steel sheets can have various metallic and organic protective coatings. A coloured finish may, for example, be polyester-based. Aluminium-zinc coating is another option, depending on the product type.

Coating suitability depends on the environment, product and maintenance. No coating can be considered the best in every situation. Check the colour and coating type in the information for the selected sheet.

What to check when choosing sheets

  • Is the sheet intended as structural decking, a roof covering or wall cladding?
  • Are the profile, thickness, supports and fixings suitable for the building’s loads?
  • Which applications and minimum roof pitch are specified for the product?
  • What coating and maintenance instructions apply?

Sheet prices and total costs

Alongside the material, the profile, coating, dimensions and required accessories affect the price. Installation and the supporting structure also contribute to the total cost.

Check the current price and sales unit. The price per sheet or unit does not, on its own, show the cost of a finished roof or facade.
